N is for The Night Of The Marshmallow Pirates #atozchallenge
This is an excerpt from another of Ollie’s picture books available soon on Amazon!
It was a quiet night at Ollie’s house where he settled down with a movie, a big bowl of popcorn, hot coco and a bag of marshmallows. Tonight’s feature would be The Daring Pirates of the Pumpernickel Seas. The popcorn bowl sat in his lap, the coca with a big crazy straw on the arm of the chair and the marshmallows were tucked by his side.
As the Pirates were adventuring and Ollie was chewing he was startled by movement at his side. He looked down. There was nothing to see but a bag of fluffy marshmallows. He went back to his movie, imagining himself as the daring pirate captain when the rustling happened again. He looked again. Still nothing but a bag of marshmallows.
Ollie continued watching his movie without noticing the little tear in the bag and the tiny pirate hat poking through. As the Pirates on screen hollered and screamed the little bag erupted and a band of marshmallow pirates spilled out rampaging over Ollie who’s popcorn flew through the air. The little marshmallows with little pirate hats and swords were yelling and screaming and chasing Ollie throughout the house.
Then they disappeared. Ollie, confused, looked around and saw no pirates. Ollie checked the kitchen with his pot lid shield and wooden spoon sword. He looked under the table and in the cupboard but no pirates. Ollie dropped his sword and shield and went to the fridge for some milk and that’s when they struck.
They burst from the fridge like a marshmallow tornado and chased Ollie around the kitchen and into the dining room breaking glasses and dishes along the way. He turned to face them and they were gone again. Where did they go? Ollie tiptoed around the dining room and looked everywhere but there was no sign of them.
There was a squeak of a closet door behind him. Ollie spun around and approached the closet, sword and shield raised. He pulled open the door and yelled, “Ahoy there!” in his best pirate voice but there were no pirates.
They came rushing from under the table yelling, whooping and knocking over plants and pictures. Ollie ran out of the dining room, up the stairs and into the bathroom. He waited for a half hour. There was no sound, no movement. He thought maybe they were gone for good. It was time to relax with a hot bath. Ollie sat in the suds with his collection of pirate ships and soaked.
There was a rustling from above and suddenly the marshmallow pirates erupted from the bathroom closet. They swung from little ropes into the decks of ships and overran the tub, the soap and the boats. Ollie jumped out of the tub and ran, covered in suds down the stairs, around the dining room, through the living room.
Chasing Ollie over the coffee table, the marshmallow pirates flew into the popcorn bowl which skidded to the edge of the table and teetered toward the fireplace. Ollie gasped at the thought of roasted marshmallow pirates and sprang into action. Like the dashing pirate captain he swung across on a web and scooped up the bowl before it could fall into the blazing fire.
Ollie put the bowl down and the little marshmallows stepped out. There they stood, with hats and swords and bandanas with big sad eyes and little smiles. Frustrated, Ollie asked, “Why are you chasing me? What do you want?”
They were quiet, maybe thinking and one finally said, ” We don’t have many friends. We’d like someone to snuggle and watch movies with.”
Up on his big comfy chair, Ollie sat with a boatload of marshmallow renegades tucked into his big comfy blankie watching the rest of his movie.
“Can I have a drink of water? Asked one. “And maybe read us a story later?, asked another.
And so it went, that in the end, the night of the marshmallow pirates was really about a lonely band of marauders in search of a friend, a cuddle and a bedtime story. And really, who wouldn’t want that?
